When I am feeling as if I am not achieving much in this world, I cheer myself up by singing this song to myself.  It reminds me that we may not be aware of most of the good we do, but if we keep showing real love to people we are sure to help someone cope with whatever they are going through at the time.  All people have some problem to deal with especially at this time.  I have found people don’t particularly want advice, they need someone to listen to them and to cheer them up.  They need assurance, that God is in control of the world whatever happens, and in their particular world things will improve and they wiill get through their tough times.

By Charlie Landsborough

Shine your light against the dark. Stand upright and make your mark
Do your best wherever you may be, And shine your light for me.

Long ago when I was just
A boy of tender years
My father told me life’s a road
Paved with joy and tears
And as you travel you must choose
Between what’s right and wrong
Remember sin is giving in
For Heaven’s sake be strong.

 Repeat chorus
As I grew beyond my teens
The world began to press
My father’s words began to fade
Lost to selfishness
And after years of walking down
The wrong side of the track
One night I cried and deep inside

My father’s words came back.
 Repeat chorus
My father said that kindness is
The light of God in man
So I was told to shine like gold
On everyone I can
I changed my ways and did my best
To right the wrong I’d done
I settled down and in a year
God blessed us with a son
Now he’s barely nine years old
A learner on life’s way
He wonders why a day goes by
He doesn’t hear me say
Repeat chorus
Do your best wherever you may be
And shine your light
Shine your light
Do your best wherever you may be
And shine your light for me.

(As Mother Theresa put it “love them anyway”.)

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centred;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may just never be enough;
Give the world the best you have anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it’s all between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.”

Jesus Bids Us Shine

Jesus bids us shine
With a pure, clear light,
Like a little candle
Burning in the night.
In this world of darkness
So let us shine
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.

Jesus bids us shine,
First of all for Him;
Well He sees and knows it,
If our light grows dim.
He looks down from Heaven
To see us shine
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.

Jesus bids us shine,
Then, for all around;
Many kinds of darkness
In the world are found
Sin and want and sorrow;
So we must shine
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.

Matthew Chapter 5 verses 1-16    (Jesus is teaching His disciples.)

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying…
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Light of the world
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

There was a blackout one night. When the lights went out, I fumbled to the closet where we keep the candles for nights like this. I lit four of them. I was turning to leave with the large candle in my hand when I heard a voice, “Now, hold it right there.”

“Who said that?”

“I did.” The voice was near my hand.

“Who are you? What are you?”

“I’m a candle.”

I lifted up the candle to take a closer look. There was a tiny face in the wax.

“Don’t take me out of here!”

“I said, don’t take me out of the closet.”

“What do you mean? I have to take you out. You’re a candle. Your job is to give light. It’s dark out there.”

“But you can’t take me out. I’m not ready,” the candle explained with pleading eyes. “I need more preparation.”

I couldn’t believe my ears. “More preparation?”

“Yeah, I’ve decided I need to research this job of light-giving so I won’t go out and make a bunch of mistakes. You’d be surprised how distorted the glow of an untrained candle can be.”

“All right then,” I said. “You’re not the only candle on the shelf. I’ll blow you out and take the others!”

But right then I heard other voices, “We aren’t going either!” I turned to the other candles, “You are candles and your job is to light dark places!”

“Well, that may be what you think,” said the first one, “You may think we have to go, but I’m busy. I’m meditating on the importance of light. It’s really enlightening.”

“And you other two,” I asked, “are you going to stay too?”

A short, fat, purple candle with plump cheeks spoke up. “I’m waiting to get my life together. I’m not stable enough.”

The last candle had a female voice, very pleasant to the ear. “I’d like to help,” she explained, “but lighting the darkness is not my gift. I’m a singer. I sing to other candles to encourage them to burn more brightly.” She began a rendition of “This Little Light of Mine.” The other three joined in, filling the closet with singing.

I took a step back and considered the absurdity of it all. Four perfectly healthy candles singing to each other about light but refusing to come out of the closet.

Start by genuinely helping someone who is worse off than yourself.  No agenda!  You do it because you love them not because you want to ‘save them’.  This world is full of darkness, with many people stumbling around trying to find their way. You can be a light for them, and believe me, there’s a light waiting for you. It can all happen with something as simple as sharing your faith, to just a smile across the room, to a quick hello to a forgotten friend, or a chat to a stranger at the bus stop.  You may know of someone who needs help with the shopping or household chores.  You will find that many people are struggling in this so called ‘modern world’, and many of them long for a listening ear from someone!

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a lamp stand; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

When we turn the other cheek when we are attacked, our light shines.

When we respond in kindness to our enemies (read competitors), our light shines.

When we give erring employees another chance when the world wouldn’t, our light shines.

When we tell others that the most important thing in our lives is Jesus Christ and not success, and then

live so they can see that it’s true, our light shines.

When we go the second mile when others wouldn’t, our light shines.

When we risk looking the fool for Christ where others dare not, our light shines.

When we wish genuine good to all men, with the greatest good being their salvation, our light shines.

When we would rather see men saved than to make a profit from them, our light shines.

When we keep our word in spite of the fact that it costs us dearly to do so, our light shines.

When we honour all men, even those of much lower place than God has called us to, our light shines.

When we don’t demand the privilege that our position affords us in the eyes of the world, our light shines.

When we take no advantage for ourselves even when we could, our light shines.

When we use our money to build people, rather than our people to build money, our light shines.

When we do just what Jesus would do in the same circumstances, our light shines, and He lives. Jesus is still The Light. He lives as we let him shine in our good works.

We often feel inadequate and unable to reach these high standards, but it is The Holy Spirit living within us that motivates us and helps us to achieve God’s will in our lives, which is as follows:

The Two Greatest Commandments Matthew chapter 22 verses 34-38

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.

35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

“We can only appreciate the miracle of a sunrise if we have waited in the darkness”

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.”  Og Mandino

May the love hidden deep inside your heart find the love waiting in your dreams. May the laughter that you find in your tomorrow wipe away the pain you find in your yesterdays.

To be a star, you must shine your own light, follow your own path, and don’t worry about the darkness, for that is when the stars shine brightest.

 “For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”     Vincent van Gogh

Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find ”tomorrow” on the calendars of fools. Forget yesterday’s defeats and ignore the problems of tomorrow. This is it. Doomsday. All you have. Make it the best day of your year. The saddest words you can ever utter are, ”If I had my life to live over again. ”Take the baton, now. Run with it! This is your day! Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.”    Og Mandino

Never neglect the little things. Never skimp on that extra effort, that additional few minutes, that soft word of praise or thanks, that delivery of the very best that you can do. It does not matter what others think, it is of prime importance, however, what you think about you. You can never do your best, which should always be your trademark, if you are cutting corners and shirking responsibilities. You are special. Act it. Never neglect the little things.       Og Mandino

Love me when I least deserve it, because that’s when I really need it.”     Swedish Proverb

Spiteful words can hurt your feelings but silence breaks your heart.

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”   Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worse kind of suffering.”    Paulo Coelho

If you wait to do everything until you’re sure it’s right, you’ll probably never do much of anything.      Win Borden

  It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”       Walt Disney

If you see a friend without a smile; give him one of yours.”      Proverb

Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.”         W. Clement Stone

Time goes by so fast, people go in and out of your life. You must never miss the opportunity to tell these people how much they mean to you.”

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”        Lao Tzu

When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”    Confucius

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”          Benjamin Spock

You won’t realize the distance you’ve walked until you take a look around and realize how far you’ve been.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”        Mahatma Gandhi
