Faithful Is He Who Has Promised

FAITHFUL IS HE WHO HAS PROMISED

Are you passing through a testing?  Is your pillow wet with tears?

Do you wonder what the reason:  Why it seems God never hears?

Why it is you have no answer, to your oft, repeated plea?

Why the heaven still is leaden, as you wait on bended knee?

Do you wonder as you suffer?  Whether God does understand,

And if so, why He ignores you,  Fails to hold you in His Hand?

Do black doubts creep in, assail you, Fears without–and fears within,

Till your brave heart almost falters  And gives way to deadly sin?

All God’s testings have a purpose; Someday you will see the light.

All He asks is that you trust Him, Walk by faith and not by sight.

Do not fear when doubts beset you; Just remember – He is near;

He will never, never leave you, He will always, always hear.

Faithful is He who has promised; He will never let you fall.

Daily will the strength be given; Strength for each and strength for all.

He will gladly share pain with you.  He will gladly give you peace.

Till your tired and weary body Finds its blessed, glad release.

When the darkened veil is lifted, Then, dear heart, you’ll understand

Why it is you had to suffer, Why you could not feel His hand.

Giving strength when it was needed, Giving power and peace within,

Giving joy thru tears and trial, Giving victory over sin.

So till then just keep on trusting, thru the sunshine and the rain.

Thru the tears and thru the heartaches, thru the smiles and thru the pain

Knowing that our Father watches, knowing daily strength He’ll give,

Victory for each passing hour, this is life, so let us live!

Malachi Chapter 3 verses 16-17.    A Book of Remembrance

16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the Lord And who meditate on His name.

17 “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them As a man spares his own son who serves him.”

RUGGED CROSS

CALVARY IS THE REASON

I was lost but You knew where to find me.

I was hungry, You were bread for my soul.

I was thirsty and You gave me living water.

You were my shelter when I had no place to go.

Chorus:

That’s why sometimes I just want to praise You.

Sometimes just to speak Your name.

Sometimes I just want to thank You,

Without asking You for a thing.

Oh, sometimes I lift my hands to You.

Sometimes all I do is cry.

Every day that I live I owe to You, Lord,

and Calvary’s the reason why.

When I think of the love that You’ve given,

Lord, when I think of the price You paid for me,

Then the trials of this world they seem like nothing,

When they’re compared to dark Calvary.

Chorus

Everything that I have I owe to You, Lord,

and Calvary’s the reason why.

BECAUSE HE LIVES

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus

He came to love, heal, and forgive.

He lived and died to buy my pardon,

An empty grave is there to prove my Saviour lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.

Because He lives, All fear is gone.

Because I know He holds the future,

And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,

And feel the pride and joy he gives.

But greater still the calm assurance,

This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.

Because He lives, All fear is gone.

Because I know He holds the future,

And life is worth the living just because He lives.

And then one day I’ll cross the river,

I’ll fight life’s final war with pain.

And then as death gives way to victory,

I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.

Because He lives, All fear is gone!

Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living just because He lives!

Words: Bill & Gloria Gaither

Story of the Song

Today, millions of Americans and people around the world are coming to love southern gospel music, and a big reason is the popularity of the Bill and Gloria Gaither Homecoming concerts and

videos. For more than 40 years, the Gaithers have been writing and performing Christian songs. “He Touched Me,” “There’s Something About That Name,” and some 600 others are featured in many church hymnals. But “Because He Lives” is perhaps the best known. In the late 1960s, while expecting their third child, the Gaithers were going through a traumatic time. Their firstborn, Suzanne, was 4, and her sister Amy was three months old. The timing for another baby wasn’t ideal. On top of that, Bill was recovering from a bout with mononucleosis. The break-up of the marriage of Bill’s sister, Mary Ann, had left his family devastated. What’s more, a close friend’s accusation that Bill and Gloria were using their ministry just to make a buck blindsided the couple and plunged Bill into a deep depression. Gloria also remembers it as a time of fear and sadness. The educational system was being infiltrated with the “God is dead” idea, while drug abuse and racial tension were increasing. The thought of bringing another child into the world was taking its toll. But after a simple prayer by one of Bill’s close friends—a prayer that commanded the devil to back off—both Bill and Gloria recall that the strength of the Holy Spirit seemed to come to their aid. Christ’s resurrection, in all its power, was reaffirmed in their hearts. They were assured that the future, left in God’s hands, would be just fine. In July 1970 a healthy baby, Benjamin, was born. Inspired by the miracle of their son’s birth, “Because He Lives” poured out of the Gaithers’ grateful hearts. The song clearly affirms the hope believers have in Christ. We can face tomorrow, with all its uncertainty, as we realize that God holds the future and makes life worth living.

I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMORROW

I don’t know about tomorrow,

I just live from day to day.

And I don’t borrow from its sunshine

‘Cause the skies might turn to grey.

And I don’t worry about the future,

‘Cause I know what Jesus said,

And today I’m gonna walk right beside him

‘Cause he’s the one who knows what is ahead.

There are things about tomorrow

That I don’t seem to understand

But I know who holds tomorrow

And I know who holds my hand.

And each step is getting brighter

As the golden stairs I climb.

And every burden is getting lighter

And all the clouds are silver lined.

And, over there the sun is always shining

And no tears will ever dim the eye

And the ending of the rainbow

Where the mountains, they touch the sky.

There are many things about tomorrow

I don’t seem to understand

But I know who holds tomorrow And I know who holds my hand. Yes I know who holds my hand.

The song is called “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” and it was written in 1950 by a traveling preacher named Ara Stanphill. This is a song of trust written during a time of agony and doubt in his life. Stanphill’s wife battled addiction and left him for other men. You could imagine the gossip that flew in that era when a preacher’s wife left to live a life of sin. Yet Stanphill forgave her, tried to reconcile and remained true to his vows. But he was human and he suffered depression and grief. He wondered why God would allow such a fate for a man dedicated to His service. One day he was feeling sorry for himself as he drove. In the depths of his sadness he began to hum a tune and the next thing he knew he was singing a song. He sang about not knowing what was in the future but knowing that God was with him every step of the way. He rushed to his piano when he arrived at his office and jotted down the words.

I’M FREE FROM THE FEAR OF TOMORROW

So long I had searched for life’s meaning,

Enslaved by the world and my greed;

Then the door of the prison was opened by love,

For the ransom was paid – I was free.

Refrain

I’m free from the fear of tomorrow,

I’m free from the guilt of the past;

For I’ve traded my shackles for a glorious song,

I’m Free! Praise the Lord! Free at last!

I’m free from the guilt that I carried,

From that dull empty life I’m set free;

For when I met Jesus, He made me complete,

He forgot the foolish man I used to be.

Refrain

I’m free from the fear of tomorrow,

I’m free from the guilt of the past;

For I’ve traded my shackles for a glorious song,

I’m Free! Praise the Lord! Free at last!

I’m free from the fear of tomorrow,

I’m free from the guilt of the past;

For I’ve traded my shackles for a glorious song,

I’m Free! Praise the Lord! Free at last!

I’m Free! Praise the Lord! Free at last!

JESUS HOLD MY HAND

As I travel through this pilgrim land

There is a friend who walks with me

Leads me safely through the sinking sand

It is the Christ of Calvary

This would be my prayer dear Lord each day

To help me do the best I can

For I need Thy Light

to guide me day and night

Blessed Jesus, hold my hand

Refrain

Jesus, hold my hand,

I need Thee every hour

Through this pilgrim land

Protect me by Thy power

Hear my feeble plea

Dear Lord look down on me

When I kneel in prayer

I hope to meet You there

Blessed Jesus, hold my hand.

Let me travel in the light divine

That I might see the Blessed way

Keep me that I may be holy Thine

And sing redemption song someday

I will be a soldier brave and true

And ever firmly take a stand

For there’s no other friend

on whom I can depend

Blessed Jesus, hold my hand

Refrain

When I kneel in prayer

I hope to meet You there

Blessed Jesus hold, my hand.

Tree by water 2   Letting go

THE BEAUTIFUL TREE.

There was once a new tree in a garden full of taller, mature trees.  This was the first year the little tree had received a nice covering of leaves, and it was quite comfortable with the leaves it had.  So when autumn came and its leaves started to turn yellow the little tree was scared!  In its fear, it looked around at the other trees and saw that their leaves were also changing colour, so it relaxed a little.

But then it lost a leaf!  The little tree panicked and held on to the rest of its leaves tightly.  It looked around again at the other trees and saw that their leaves were falling off too!

Why were they letting their leaves get away?  They won’t be protected from the wind any more, and what about the sun?  How will they give shade without leaves?  The little tree decided it was going to keep its leaves, even if they were now turning brown.  The leaves were dead now, but the little tree held on, feeling safe hiding under the shelter of the leaves.  Snow fell, and the leaves became heavy, but it still held on.

Soon the weather started to turn warmer and light rains replaced the snowfall.  Ah, this was much better, he told himself.  Then he noticed the other trees had little green buds on them, and some were starting to flower!  He looked at himself and saw that he did not have any signs of change.  Pretty soon the other trees had glorious leaves on them, and some had fruit hanging among their branches.  Now he was jealous!

So he asked God, ‘Hey, why did you give the other trees new leaves and fruit, but you did not give me anything?’

God said, ‘My dear tree, I gave you the same sunshine, I gave you the same rain, and I gave you the same love as the other trees in the garden.’

The tree said, ‘But God, look at me!  I am ugly!  Why did they get new leaves, and I did not?  It’s not fair!’

God replied, ‘Well, my child, you did not get new leaves because you did not let go of the dead ones.  You see, the older trees have been through the seasons before.  They know that when they let a dead leaf go, I will replace it with a new one when spring comes.  Not only that, but I usually give them more than they had before!  They sometimes struggle with letting go, just like you.  That struggle does not go away when you grow.  You just have to know that there is a reason why you can’t keep your dead leaves.  Don’t allow fear and pride to trick you into keeping the things of your past.  Besides, you have to admit that it was difficult to hang on to them in the winter!  It is easier to let go and let me worry about the new leaves.  That is a lesson all new trees have to learn.’

The little tree said, ‘Are you saying that I can be just as beautiful as the other trees?’

God said, ‘I love you. You are already just as beautiful as they are to me.  I do not love you any less because of your old leaves.  I see what you can be, not what you look like now. But if you truly want to grow, be patient, let go of your leaves as they die, and I will do the rest.

Although I have not been able to grow a garden as beautiful as these pictures, I have always enjoyed gardening! I used to help my father in the garden when I was a child. You learn much wisdom from gardening and the different seasons. It is a great stress-buster! It teaches you patience. You cannot rush Nature. You cannot rush God’s will either. He works slowly in the background, shaping us into the person he wants us to be. Gardening also teaches you how to deal with failure and success.

I cannot work as hard in the garden now but I love looking after my houseplants. One of my favourite subjects at school was Biology. I loved learning about all the different parts of plants and what their function was. We did experiments with beans, seeds and cuttings. I still enjoy propagating cuttings to this day. We planted indoor bulbs to brighten the classroom up for the spring. Gardeners learn to accept that not everything turns out the way we want, but there is always next year, when we can perhaps do better. Even now, planting bulbs in the autumn keeps me focused on looking forward to the spring. It is way of coping with the winter. I do not like the cold weather, although I like looking at the snow from the comfort of a warm room! And I love looking forward, with hope, to what the New Year may bring.

John  chapter 15    New International Version (NIV)   The Vine and the Branches

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

17 This is my command: Love each other.

Garden 14     Garden 16

God is a gardener in our lives too! He prunes out what is bad in our lives and feeds us with that which is good. We learn the difference between what is good and what is bad from reading The Holy Bible. In it are all the instructions for living God’s way.

When we are ‘born again’ we have to be willing to change. God’s Holy Spirit helps us and guides us to live the right way. We no longer can do just what we want. We have to be willing to give up ‘self’ and ask the question, what is God’s will for my life. Over time He teaches us what He wants us to do and where He wants us to go.

If you have been putting God first place in your life and bearing fruit (that is love, joy, peace etc; the fruit of the spirit – Galatians chapter 5 verses 22-25), do not be surprised if you are faced with situations that require more love and patience with people, and more situations that try to rob you of peace, self-control, gentleness, faithfulness and kindness. God ‘prunes’ us more when we bear fruit, so that He can gradually change our hearts into the likeness of Jesus Christ, and so change us into the people He wants us to be. We are not necessarily being punished by God when life becomes difficult, it is usually because He is training us, although it is always wise to give yourself a check to see if, as far as you are able, you are putting God first place in your life. When you are in doubt about anything PRAY and in time you will be shown the answer. Even when you are unsure of what to pray, Say the words of The Lords Prayer and think about their meaning. The Holy Spirit has a way of showing us what to do when we are worried, afraid or in turmoil about any problems.

The Lord’s Prayer Words

(traditional)

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,

The power, and the glory,

For ever and ever.

Amen.

(Taken from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, 1662).

The Lord’s Prayer    Matthew Chapter 6 verses 9-15

9 “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer   Luke Chapter 11 verses 1-4

1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father,hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Sung by Bing Crosby

When I’m worried and I can’t sleep

I count my blessings instead of sheep

And I fall asleep counting my blessings

When my bankroll is getting small

I think of when I had none at all

And I fall asleep counting my blessings.

I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads

And one by one I count them

as they slumber in their beds

If you’re worried and you can’t sleep

Just count your blessings instead of sheep

And you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings.

I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads

And one by one I count them

as they slumber in their beds

If you’re worried and you can’t sleep

Just count your blessings instead of sheep

And you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Sung by Aled Jones

Count your blessings one by one,

When dawn appears and day has just begun;

They will light your heart with happiness,

Make each hour bright and bring your gladness.

Count your blessings one by one,

When twilight falls and toil of day is done.

And in sweet dreams they’ll come again to you,

If you will count your blessings each day through.

Count your blessings while you may,

For we are here but little time to stay;

All around are hearts sincere and true,

Lovely things abound just waiting for you;

Count your blessings while you may

The big or small, whichever comes your way,

For then you’ll find this world a place of love

If you will count your blessings from above.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS NAME THEM ONE BY ONE

Words: Johnson Oatman, in Songs for Young People, by Edwin Excell (Chicago, Illinois: 1897).

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done!

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Refrain

When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;

Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy

Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Refrain

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,

Do not be disheartened, God is over all;

Count your many blessings, angels will attend,

Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Refrain

Don’t Give Up When Life Is Hard

Standard

Rainbow 13

Dream 2

DON’T QUIT

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and debts are high,

And you want to smile but have to sigh.

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,

When he might have won if he’d stuck it out,

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,

You might succeed with another blow.

Often the struggler has given up,

When he might captured the victor’s cup.

And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,

How close he was to the golden crown,

Success is failure turned inside out,

The silver tint of clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems afar,

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,

It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

RUGGED CROSS

The storms of life, like bereavement, illness, divorce, loss of job, poverty etc. can be just as frightening as being in the middle of a really bad storm at sea.  We need to trust God completely in these times and then He will guide us through whatever we have to bear. It will not always be easy but in the end you will come through your troubles feeling stronger, and your faith will have grown because God will never let you down. Sometimes we let ourselves down because we give up trying ,too soon. Perseverance is vital when you are going through a hard time. People want instant answers and results these days, but some problems take a long while to get sorted out. Particularly if we have got ourselves in a bit of a mess! But God will help you, whether your problems were caused by yourself or by someone else. He is a God of mercy.  He gives people a second chance if they truly turn to Him.

God's Love    God's Love 2    God's Love 3

Romans 8:31-39    New International Version (NIV)

More Than Conquerors

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present, nor the future, nor any powers,

39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH A STORM

When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high

And don’t be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm Is a golden sky

And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain

Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on walk on with hope in your heart

And you’ll never walk alone You’ll never walk alone

When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high

And don’t be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm Is a golden sky

And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain

Though your dreams be tossed and blown

TRUST 5     Philippins 4 NIV    TRUST

It is hard to trust God completely when everything around you seems to be going wrong. But keep praising and trusting and you will find God will always be faithful, even though things may take a long time to sort out. One of the secrets is to be thankful for who you are and what you have! Count your blessings and forget the self-pity and grumbling. God is Sovereign and He is working things out for the best, even though we may not be able to see it yet. Don’t be tempted to give up, just when you may be on the brink of success in whatever is troubling you at the moment.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that, because life is hard at the moment, God is punishing you. The reasons life is difficult at the moment can be many and varied! We live in a fallen world and we have to live with the consequences of what we do and what others do to us!

Bible verse 7

Another reason is that we believers are continually going through the lifelong process of sanctification.

 Bible verse 4

God is in the lifelong process of making us fit to live eternally, with Him in Heaven after we die or when Jesus comes back to earth, whichever comes first. During this process we have to gradually give up our selfish will in all things and submit to the will of God. Actually it makes life happier, even though it is not pleasant when God has to trim all the rough edges in us!

In heavenly love abiding    In heavenly love abiding 4

The words of this next hymn helped me so much when my father died. We sang it at his funeral and I shall never forget how the words comforted me and God seemed to speak directly to my heart; especially ‘Green pastures are before me which yet I have not seen’. At the time I could not imagine how God could make me happy again but He did and many joyful moments and times have come into my life since then.

In Heavenly Love Abiding

In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear.

And safe in such confiding, for nothing changes here.

The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid,

But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?

Wherever He may guide me, no want shall turn me back.

My Shepherd is beside me, and nothing can I lack.

His wisdom ever waking, His sight is never dim.

He knows the way He’s taking, and I will walk with Him

Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen.

Bright skies will soon be over me, where darkest clouds have been.

My hope I cannot measure, my path to life is free.

My Saviour has my treasure, and He will walk with me.

God moves in a mysterious way  FAITH  FAITH 2

God Moves in a Mysterious way

God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines of never-ending skill

He treasures up His bright designs, and works His sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take, the clouds ye so much dread

are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust Him for His grace;

behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour;

the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err, and scan His work on vain;

God is His own interpreter, and He will make it plain.

ROAD 5

A BEND IN THE ROAD

When we feel we have nothing left to give

And we are sure that the song has ended,

When our day seems over and the shadows fall

And the darkness of night has descended,

Where can we go to find the strength

To valiantly keep on trying?

Where can we find the hand that will dry

The tears that the heart is crying?

There’s but one place to go and that is to God,

And, dropping all pretence and pride,

We can pour out our problems without restraint

And gain strength with Him at our side.

And together we stand at life’s crossroads

And view what we think is the end,

But God has a much bigger vision,

And He tells us it’s only a bend.

For the road goes on and is smoother,

And the pause in the song is a rest,

And the part that’s unsung and unfinished

Is the sweetest and richest and best.

So rest and relax and grow stronger,

Let go and let God share your load.

Your work is not finished or ended;

                                         You’ve just come to a bend in the road.

ROAD 4     Jeremiah2911-3

*****************************

The following story is about Job who went through a long time of great suffering. Through it all he did not stop having faith that God was sovereign in his life. He tried to work out why he was suffering but decided to trust and praise God anyway. Job prayed for his friends because they had doubted God. God forgave them. In the beginning of the story Job lost almost everything but in the end God gave back

much more than he had lost. God rewards faith and loyalty, sometimes in this life, but always in the next life (Eternity).

The Story of Job

(This is a shortened version. You can read the whole story in The Holy Bible in the book of Job in the Old Testament).

At some time in those early days, we do not know just at what time, whether in the days of Moses or later—there lived a good man named Job. His home was in the land of Uz, which may have been on the edge of the desert, east of the land of Israel. Job was a very rich man. He had sheep, and camels, and oxen, and asses, counted by the thousand. In all the east there was no other man so rich as Job. And Job was a good man. He served the Lord God, and prayed to God every day, with an offering upon God’s altar, as men worshipped in those times. He tried to live as God wished him to live, and was always kind and gentle. Every day, when his sons were out in the field, or were having a feast together in the house of any of them, Job went out to his altar, and offered a burnt-offering for each one of his sons and his daughters, and prayed to God for them; for he said: “It may be that my sons have sinned or have turned away from God in their hearts; and I will pray God to forgive them.” At one time, when the angels of God stood before the Lord, Satan the Evil One came also, and stood among them, as though he were one of God’s angels. The Lord God saw Satan, and said to him, “Satan, from what place have you come?” “I have come,” answered Satan, “from going up and down in the earth and looking at the people upon it.” Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you looked at my servant Job? And have you seen that there is not another man like him in the earth, a good and a perfect man, one who fears God and does nothing evil?” Then Satan said to the Lord: “Does Job fear God for nothing? Hast thou not made a wall around him, and around his house, and around everything that he has? Thou hast given a blessing upon his work, and has made him rich. But if thou wilt stretch forth thy hand, and take away from him all that he has, then he will turn away from thee and will curse thee to thy face.” Then the Lord said to the Evil One, “Satan, all that Job has is in your power; you can do to his sons, and his flocks, and his cattle, whatever you wish; only lay not your hand upon the man himself.” Then Satan went forth from the Lord; and soon trouble began to come upon Job. One day, when all his sons and daughters were eating and drinking together in their oldest brother’s house, a man came running to Job, and said: “The oxen were ploughing, and the asses were feeding beside them, when the wild men from the desert came upon them, and drove them all away; and the men who were working with the oxen and caring for the asses have all been killed; and I am the only one who has fled away alive!” While this man was speaking, another man came rushing in; and he said: “The lightning from the clouds has fallen on all the sheep, and on the men who were tending them; and I am the only one who has come away alive!” Before this man had ended, another came in; and he said: “The enemies from Chaldea have come in three bands, and have taken away all the camels. They have killed the men who were with them; and I am the only one left alive!” Then at the same time, one more man came in, and said to Job: “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking together in their oldest brother’s house, when a sudden and terrible wind from the desert struck the house, and it fell upon them. All your sons and your daughters are dead, and I alone have lived to tell you of it.” Thus in one day, all that Job had—his flocks, and his cattle, and his sons and his daughters—all were taken away; and Job, from being rich, was suddenly made poor. Then Job fell down upon his face before the Lord, and he said: “With nothing I came into the world, and with nothing I shall leave it. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” So even when all was taken from him Job did not turn away from God, nor did he find fault with God’s doings. And again the angels of God were before the Lord, and Satan, who had done all this harm to Job, was among them. The Lord said to Satan, “Have you looked at my servant Job? There is no other man in the world as good as he; a perfect man, one that fears God and does no wrong act. Do you see how he holds fast to his goodness, even after I have let you do him so great harm?” Then Satan answered the Lord, “All that a man has he will give for his life. But if thou wilt put thy hand upon and touch his bone and his flesh, he will turn from thee, and will curse thee to thy face.” And the Lord said to Satan, “I will give Job into your hand; do to him whatever you please; only spare his life.” Then Satan went out and struck Job, and caused dreadful boils to come upon him, over all his body, from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. And Job sat down in the ashes in great pain; but he would not speak one word against God. His wife said to him, “What is the use of trying to serve God? You may as well curse God, and die!” But Job said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women. What? Shall we take good things from the Lord? And shall we not take evil things also?” So Job would not speak against God. Then three friends of Job came to see him, and to try to comfort him in his sorrow and pain. Their names were Eliphaz, and Bildad, and Zophar. They sat down with Job, and wept, and spoke to him. But their words were not words of comfort. They believed that all these great troubles had come upon Job to punish him for some great sin, and they tried to persuade Job to tell what evil things he had done, to make God so angry with him. For in those times most people believed that trouble, and sickness, and the loss of friends, and the loss of what they had owned, came to men because God was angry with them on account of their sins. These men thought that Job must have been very wicked because they saw such evils coming upon him. They made long speeches to Job, urging him to confess his wickedness. Job said that he had done no wrong; that he had tried to do right; and he did not know why these troubles had come; but he would not say that God had dealt unjustly in letting him suffer. Job did not understand God’s ways, but he believed that God was good; and he left himself in God’s hands. And at last God himself spoke to Job and to his friends, telling them that it is not for man to judge God, and that God will do right by every man. And the Lord said to the three friends of Job: “You have not spoken of me what is right, as Job has. Now bring an offering to me; and Job shall pray for you, and for his sake I will forgive you.” So Job prayed for his friends, and God forgave them. And because in all his troubles Job had been faithful to God, the Lord blessed Job once more, and took away his boils from him, and made him well. Then the Lord gave to Job more than he had ever owned in the past, twice as many sheep, and oxen, and camels, and asses. And God gave again to Job seven sons and three daughters; and in all the land there were no women found so lovely as the daughters of Job. After his trouble, Job lived a long time, in riches, and honour, and goodness, under God’s care.

GOD IS WORKING HIS PURPOSE OUT

God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year,

God is working His purpose out and the time is drawing near;

nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,

when the earth shall be filled with the Glory of God

as the waters cover the sea.

From utmost east to utmost west where human feet have trod,

by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God,

‘Give ear to me ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me,

that the earth may be filled with the glory of God

as the waters cover the sea’.

What can we do to work God’s work, to prosper and increase

love and justice throughout the world, the reign of the Prince of Peace?

What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be,

when the earth shall be filled with the Glory of God

as the waters cover the sea.

March we forth in the strength of God with the banner of Christ unfurled,

that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world;

fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free,

that the earth may be filled with the glory of God

as the waters cover the sea’.

All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed;

Vainly we wait for the harvestide till God gives life to the seed;

Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,

when the earth shall be filled with the Glory of God

as the waters cover the sea.

O WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!

Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim;

With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,

Kneel and adore Him: the Lord is His Name!

Low at His feet lay thy burden of carefulness,

High on His heart He will bear it for thee,

And comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness,

Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.

Fear not to enter His courts in the slenderness

Of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine;

For truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness,

These are the offerings to lay on His shrine.

These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,

He will accept for the Name that is dear;

Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness,

Trust for our trembling and hope for our fear.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!

Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim;

With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,

Kneel and adore Him: the Lord is His Name!
