Nourish your soul and spirit
Philippians Chapter 4 verses 4-9
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
We human beings are made up of a body, soul and spirit.
We seem to know well enough how to feed our bodies.
When we become Christians, we begin to learn how to feed our spirit. By praying to God, reading the Holy Bible, bible study and fellowship with other Christians, reading Christian books etc.
When it comes to our soul, we Christians don’t seem to feel clear about what is good for us! We seem to draw boundary lines that make us feel as if we are becoming too ‘worldly’ if we as much as watch television or go to the cinema for instance. So we tend to withdraw from any activity that isn’t labelled ‘Christian’. We need to mix with people; otherwise we become ‘too heavenly minded to be any earthly use’.
Whatsoever is lovely. Beauty is necessary to feed the soul.
Beauty can be found in many places. If we are looking for God we can find Him everywhere. He gives us the discernment to appreciate beauty and to shun evil. The world of nature (God’s creation) is full of beauty all around us, mountains, valleys, seashores, rivers, waterfalls etc. The tranquillity in these places helps us to gather our thoughts and gain a right perspective on our lives. The different seasons of the year bring their unique beauty too. There are the changing colours of trees and plants in autumn. A fresh fall of deep snow in winter can transform a garden into something like an artist’s painting. Spring is when everything in nature comes alive again. Trees blossom, bulbs flower and greenery flourishes everywhere where there appeared to be only brown soil. Summer is the gardener’s joy! Fruit and vegetables thrive and colour from all the flowers is a delight!
Gardeners (with God’s help) create beautiful gardens. There is beauty in both formal and wild gardens. Artists use their talent to create beautiful pictures. Singers and composers bring us music and lyrics that touches our hearts. Many secular songs,especially from the past, have lyrics that help us to become compassionate and not always thinking about ‘self”. Comedians make us laugh and laughter is the best medicine of all! Comedians can be funny without being rude, in fact all the best comedians, were and are, never rude.
Colossians Chapter 3 Verse 23 and 24.
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
There is a beauty in excellence. Always do your best, wherever you are and whoever you are with, knowing that everything you do is for God. You may think that your job is not important, but everyone is needed. We each have a part to play in this world. We will not all be famous, but our particular role is vital. Always do the very best you can because God looks at your heart as much as your work. He knows your struggles and your efforts under difficulty. He wants you to be successful but what pleases Him most is faith and loyalty. Often success in the world’s eyes is different to success in God’s eyes.
Isaiah 55:8-9 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
We have to be real with God because He knows our motives and dreams as well as our actions. We may be rewarded in this life for our endurance under trials, or we may not! What matters most is hearing Jesus words* (when we die or when He returns to earth, whichever comes first.) *Matthew Chapter 25 verse 21 21 Jesus said ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
God’s handiwork is always excellent. Think of the sun, moon and stars; they are constantly held in place by God. The timing of night, day and seasons is in God’s hands and it is a constant source of wonder. If you have ever studied the intricacy of nature in flowers, insects, fish, birds etc you will understand the awesomeness of God. Even in the tiniest of flowers, insects, shellfish etc, the arrangement of the cells and the mathematical precision of the designs tell me that we serve a God who is interested in the tiniest details of our lives.
As the world goes on getting more difficult to live in, many people are lonely, worried, frightened and coping with burdens.
All over the world there are serious problems of poverty and famine.
There have been severe weather problems leaving people without shelter or food or water.
Even the more affluent countries are having financial and economic problems. Many people are worried about their financial situation.
Many people are lonely and cannot afford to go out to places. They are finding it hard just getting through every day.
Many people are afraid of crime.
Many people feel that God is very far away from them and feel that He has forgotten them.
They need to know about the love of God, because faith really does help when life becomes difficult. God hasn’t forgotten them. He is only a prayer away.
But we need to tell people.
These people need the love of God to reach them and this can happen if we will just be willing to respond to the people that God puts in our path. We may be able to send money to charities which help famine and disaster areas. If we cannot send money we can pray for them.
People have to be loved and respected before we bombard them with the gospel. Some people have been hurt and rejected in their past and it is not enough only to tell people that God loves them. We have to show them by our kindness.
We have to be interested in the things that they are interested in. We have to talk to them to find out their worries and cares and if possible, help them find a solution. In order to do this we must look after our bodies to keep healthy and we must feed our spirit with God’s word (The Holy Bible). I also believe that we have to feed our soul so that our emotions can be healthy too.
Most important of all, if we want to serve God by serving people, we need to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. We need wisdom from God to know how to respond to peoples’ problems. The Holy Spirit will guide us and give us wisdom. The Holy Spirit pours love into our hearts and lives, so that we are able to love people and not judge them. God alone can judge people because He knows all things, all situations, all motives and all the sorrows that person has been through.
We shall never know all the answers, but God always gives us enough guidance to take one step at a time into the future, over which He has complete control.
Jesus is a Friend and a Brother. He is full of compassion. He died willingly on the cross to forgive us our sins, mistakes, faults and our past. He knows our weaknesses and is willing to help us if only we will ask Him in prayer. He will never turn anyone away if they truly seek His Love. We are saved by Grace. It is a free gift but we have to accept it. Grace is when God gives us what we don’t deserve and mercy is when God doesn’t give us what we do deserve.
