Coping With Changes

The words of this hymn helps to strengthen faith when times are hard and days seem long, through bereavement, redundancy, divorce and any kind of loss. It also helps us to praise and thank God when life is kind to us!

Tears 3      JOY 3

Composer: Joseph Stephenson Lyricists: Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady (from A new version of the psalms of David)

Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy,

the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his Name;

when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came.

The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just;

deliverance he affords to all who on his succour trust.

O make but trial of his love; experience will decide

how blest are they, and only they who in his truth confide.

Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear;

make you his service your delight; your wants shall be his care.

For God preserves the souls of those

who on his truth depend; to them and their posterity.

The words of this gospel song help us through the bad times. God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Jesus is forever our rock, which we can lean on when we need help.

 mountain      valley

Life is easy when you’re up on the mountain

And you’ve got peace of mind like you’ve never known.

But then things change and you’re down in the valley.

Don’t lose faith for you’re never alone.

For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley.

When things go wrong, He’ll make it right.

And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times.

The God of the day is still God in the night.

You talk of faith when you’re up on the mountain.

Oh but the talk comes easy when life’s at its best.

But it’s down in the valley of trials and temptation

That’s when faith is really put to the test.

For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley.

When things go wrong, He’ll make it right.

And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times.

The God of the day is still God in the night.

For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley.

When things go wrong, He’ll make it right.

And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times.

The God of the day is still God in the night.

The God of the day is still God in the night.

Tears 4

Sometimes we learn great truths about God’s love, mercy and faithfulness, and our heart is softened,

when we are ‘in the valley’.   M. Mainwaring

Pope Francis picture

 No matter which denomination we belong to we cannot fail to be moved by our first impressions of Pope Francis as he appeared and spoke on the balcony of the Vatican last night. He came across as a man of God dedicated to doing the will of God in his life. He has compassion and love for people and he encouraged us to live our lives in the same way. He reminded me to always remember Jesus’ Two Greatest Commandments. God bless Pope Francis in his work and role of Pope.

The Two Greatest Commandments Matthew chapter 22 verses 34-40

Compassion 2

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.

35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

40 All the Law* and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

(* The Ten Commandments)

When we fully obey these two commandments of Jesus, we will find that we are in fact, obeying the Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments Exodus 20:1-17

1 And God spoke all these words, saying,

2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.)

 Butterfly 10

2 Corinthians 5:17

 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

We will find that we do not want to murder, steal, envy other peoples property etc. We find that God helps us when we aim to live to please Him.  He gradually changes our desires and changes our stony hearts to hearts full of love, mercy and compassion.  We begin to see life and people from God’s point of view.  We have a renewed mind  If God can change a caterpillar to a butterfly, how much more He will change you into His image.  Every person who has been invited God into their heart, confessed and repented of their sins to  God Almighty and surrendered their life to the Lord Jesus Christ, is internally and eternally changed by God. Each person has moved from being a caterpillar to being transformed into a butterfly, figuratively speaking.

 Quote 9

Romans 12:2

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Corinthians 13  The Greatest Gift

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
